729,342. Casting composite articles. MORGAN CRUCIBLE CO., Ltd. Oct. 20, 1953 [Oct. 23, 1952], No. 26672/52. Class 83 (1). In a process for producing a metal-ceramic body by infiltration of molten silver into a porous alumina body, a coating of a metal oxide, namely copper oxide or vanadium pentoxide, is produced on the internal surface of the interconnecting pores of the alumina body, and the infiltration then effected. The metal oxide may be produced by saturating the porous body in a salt of the metal such as copper nitrate or ammonium vanadate and then converting the salt into the oxide, as by drying and baking at a temperature of 400-600 C. In a modification vanadium pentoxide powder is mixed with silver powder and applied to the body, or spread as a layer between the silver and the body. In each case the vanadium pentoxide, having a lower melting point than silver, will infiltrate to coat the walls of the pores before the silver infiltrates. Infiltration is carried out in an inert or an oxidizing atmosphere.
