Abstract

Sapogenin is obtained from plant material containing its glycosides or other derivatives, e.g. from sisal and other plants of the genus Agave, by separating the plant juice from the plant material, allowing the juice to ferment, and collecting the resultant sludge from which the sapogenin is recovered; subsequently, heating the sludge with a small proportion of mineral acid to agglomerate the finer solid particles therein, collecting the sludge solids, heating the sludge solids with mineral acid for a time and at a temperature sufficient to effect substantial hydrolysis thereof, removing the alcohol by steam distillation if alcoholic acid is employed for the hydrolysis, and collecting the nonaqueous phase from the resultant suspension, and extracting the collected material by means of an organic solvent to produce hecogenin. The water-insoluble solids resulting from the acid hydrolysis may be treated with an adsorbent material, e.g. activated charcoal, prior to decantation, filtration &c. As an alternative process the hecogenin can be obtained by direct extraction of the dried plant juice sludge with an organic fat solvent, e.g. isopropyl ether or carbon tetrachloride. Specifications 702,072 and 722,186 are referred to.
