Abstract

An aqueous emulsion of a substantially water-insoluble neutral tertiary ester of orthophosphoric acid or of a diester of an organo-substituted phosphoric acid, comprising at least one group of at least 6 carbon atoms, is used for treating textile fibres preparatory to spinning. Hydrophilic groups derived from glycol, polyglycol, glycerine, polyglycerine, erythritol, sorbitol, pentaerythritol, amino alcohols and amino sugars may be incorporated in the ester molecule to render the esters more readily emulsifiable. It is possible also to use compounds containing a plurality of phosphoric acid radicles linked by bridge members derived from bi-functional compounds such as diethanolamine, triethanolamine, hexane diol, octane diol and octadecane diol. The compositions may also contain neutral fats, fatty alcohols, fatty acids, fatty acid amides and their condensation products with polyglycols, sugars, protective colloids, stiffening agents of natural or synthetic origin, soaps, anionic, non-ionic and cationic surface-active agents, organic solvents, mineral oils, waxes, petroleum jelly and paraffin. In an example washed wool is treated with a 4 per cent aqueous emulsion of the tertiary ester of orthophosphoric acid and lauryl alcohol.ALSO:An aqueous emulsion of a substantially water-insoluble neutral tertiary ester of orthophosphric acid or of a diester of an organo-substituted phosphonic acid, comprizing at least one group of at least 6 carbon atoms, is used for treating textile fibres preparatory to spinning. Hydrophilic groups derived from glycol, polyglycol, glycerine, polyglycerine, erythritol, sorbitol, pentaerythritol, amino alcohols and amino sugars may be incorporated in the ester molecule to render the esters more readily emulsifiable. It is possible also to use compounds containing a plurality of phospheric acid radicles linked by bridge members derived from bi-functional compounds such as diethanolamine, triethanolamine, hexanediol, octane diol, and octadecane diol. The compositions may also contain neutral fats, fatty alcohols, fatty acids, fatty acid amides and their condensation products with polyglycols, sugars, protective colloids, stiffening agents of natural or synthetic origin, soaps, anionic, non-ionic and cationic surface-active agents, organic solvents, mineral oils, waxes, petroleum jelly and paraffin. In an example washed wool is treated with a 4 per cent. aqueous emulsion of the tertiary ester of orthophosphoric acid and lauryl alcohol.
