Abstract
727,760. Particle accelerators. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Jan. 13, 1954 [Jan. 13, 1953], No. 1015/53. Class 39 (1). In a travelling-wave linear accelerator in which the accelerator wave-guide comprises a particle buncher section followed by a main accelerator section, feed-back is provided between the target end of the waveguide and the commencement of the main accelerator section in such a manner that the buncher section is substantially unaffected by the feedback. Power is fed to the buncher section BS through a wave-guide P, and at the end of the buncher section, the residual power is taken out through wave-guide A and fed to the bridge B. Connection A2 from the bridge takes input power to the main accelerator section MS, and the residual power at the end of the section is fed back to the bridge through the connection FB. The connection DL to the bridge includes a dummy load. The electron beam passes through apertures in a wave-guide transformer J. Phase shifters S1, S2 are provided in the connections A1, FB. Phase shifter S1 is adjusted for maximum power flow in the main accelerator section, and phase shifter S2 may be adjusted to obtain variation of the electron energy.
