Abstract

726,911. Extruding polyamide. POLYMER CORPORATION. Feb. 29, 1952 [March 13, 1951], No. 5358/52. Class 87 (2) Elongated shapes, such as rods C, are formed from a high-melting polyamide by feeding the material towards the open end of an elongated tube 20 and cooling it at a rate sufficient to effect solidification throughout a major portion of its cross-section prior to emergence at the discharge end of the tube, the polyamide being under pressure sufficiently high to fill the entrance end of the tube and to cause pressure to be exerted against the tube wall at this point. The polyamide is first dried, preferably by warming under vacuum, then delivered by means of a hopper 18 to a screw-feeder 16 heated by elements 19, where it is melted and fed through a perforated breakerplate (not shown) to the tube 20. The tube may be cooled by means of a water-cooling coil 21. As the polyamide advances along the tube it solidifies radially inwardly and shrinks from the tube wall. The rate of feed and the rate of cooling are so adjusted that the frictional engagement of the solidified annulus near the entrance of the tube causes a substantial pressure to be maintained in the molten material and thus prevents development of porosity due to shrinkage. Small quantities of fillers, e.g. graphite, anti-oxidants or modifiers, may be added to the polyamide. To initiate the extruding process the tube is provided with a plug which is initially placed in the entrance end of the tube and is forced towards the exit end by the advancing polyamide.
