Abstract

726,094. Bending and tempering glass sheets. FOLKES, G. E. (Libby-Owens-Ford Glass Co.) March 7, 1953, No. 6360/53. Class 56. Glass sheets are bent and tempered by being supported across moulds 26 which are traversed through a heating chamber 3 provided with movable heat shields 87 to shut off selected portions of the sheets from the effect of the radiant heaters 92 to permit some portions to be heated to a higher temperature to assist the accurate bending of the sheets. Alternatively the heat shields may be carried by the moving moulds. Before leaving the chamber 3, the bent sheet is uniformly heated on both sides e.g. by blankets of flame from burners 108, 109. After leaving the chamber 3 the bent sheets are quickly passed to the tempering apparatus 6 through which it passes more slowly. The tempering apparatus includes convex nozzles 18 and concave nozzles 21, shaped to the section of the bent sheet, which deliver cooling air from upper and lower chambers 17.
