A thermostatically controlled electric grill comprises two electrically heated plates, one fixed in an inclined position on a base and the other pivoted in a frame hinged adjacent the side of the fixed plate, the thermostat being mounted in a space separated from the plates by heat insulating material and heat being conveyed to the temperature sensitive element of the thermostat through a strip or the like of heat conducting material making contact with one of the plates and extending through the heat-insulating material. A rectangular sheet metal base 10 supports a grill plate 14 on straps 16 secured to the base and cranked at 17 so as to tilt plate 14. Electric heating element 21 is clamped between a plate 22 and plate 14 by nuts or studs 24 which extend downwardly and carry metal plates 25, 26 which support insulating material, e.g. glass wool. At the rear of plate 14 is a wall 29 whose top forms a semi-cylindrical hood 31 extending between ears 32. A rod 33, extending through holes in ear 32, is secured to the arms of a three-sided frame 34 to which is pivoted at 36 an upper electrically heated grill plate 35. Springs 38, which are coiled around rod 33, have each an arm 41 anchored at the pivot 36 and an arm anchored to an adjustable plate 42, Fig. 3, and partly counter balance the weight of the upper grill plate. One or more stops 45 engage grill plate 35 when frame 34 is pivoted upwards. The heating elements in the two plates are connected in parallel, a flexible tube 46 carrying the connections to the upper grill plate and a thermostatic switch 49 being included in the circuit. Switch 49 receives heat from the end of a brass strip 51 secured to plate 14 and extending down through the insulating material. The heat conducted along strip 51 is dissipated rapidly so that the lower end is at a temperature proportional to but not equal to that of the grill plate 14. Knobs 53 open contacts of switch 49 independently of the thermostat and also adjusts the thermostat.
