Abstract

725,613. Feeding webs. BRITISH TABU. LATING MACHINE CO., Ltd. May 20, 1953, No. 14171/53. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group XIX] A data bearing tape is fed past a magnetic sensing head or photo-electric device by two pairs of rollers one pair being stationary and the other pair constantly running with one roller of each pair being carried on a rockable member arranged to grip the tape between one or other of the pairs of rollers to stop or start the tape rapidly. A tape 2, Fig. 1, passes between stationary rollers 5 and 6, over a guide plate 8, and between a pair of constantly running rollers 3, 4. The tape is guided by freely revolving rollers 9 and a free loop of tape is provided between the pairs of rollers and the supply and take-up spools which may be driven in known manner by servo mechanisms controlled by the loop positions. The rollers 4 and 5 are mounted at the ends of two arms of a rocker 10. The rocker has two further arms which carry extensions 11 and 12 which form the armature for a. start electromagnet 13 and a stop electromagnet 14. The rocker is pivoted on a stud 15. The lengths of the arms of the rockers is such that for a given movement of the armatures, the rollers move through twice the distance. When the stop magnet 14 is energized the extension 12 tends to move so that it is opposite the core of the magnet and this movement forces the rollers 5 and 6 together, and holds the rollers 3 and 4 apart, keeping the tape stationary. Similarly when the start magnet 13 is energized the tape is released from the stationary rollers and gripped between the constantly running rollers 3 and 4. The movement between rollers 4 and 5 necessary to grip the tape is small so that the gears 18 and 19 which transmit the drive from shaft 17 to the lower driven roller 4 remain in mesh irrespective of the position of the rocker 10. The block 16 carrying the stud 15 is adjustable by means of a screw 20 in a fixed block 21, so as to accommodate different thicknesses of tape. A magnetic reading head 22 is mounted on a plate 23 which is also adjustable so that the distance of the reading head from the tape may be adjusted. A photo-electric head may be provided in place of the magnetic tape if punched tape is provided in lieu of magnetic tape.
