Abstract

In enriching yeast with therapeutically active substances by cultivating the yeast in a fermentation liquid containing such substances, the period of fermentation is prolonged to extend over more than one yeast generation. Yeast may be so enriched with arsenic to a concentration of 20 mg. per 100 ml. of cell liquid by addition to the fermentation liquid of arsenious acid by degrees in equal or increasing amounts up to a concentration of 1 mg. in 100 ml. of fermentation liquid. In so enriching yeast with copper, metallic copper or a copper salt is added to the fermentation liquid. Further examples are of enrichment of yeast with synthetic salicylic acid by adding this substance to the fermentation liquid, and of enrichment with the active principles of Atropa belladonna, colchicum autumnale, Nux vomica, Anemone pulsatilla and Allium sativum by addition of these plants in the fresh or dried condition, or the juices from the plants, to the fermentation liquid. The medicament produced may be preserved in alcohol or may be spray dried at below 50 DEG C.
