Abstract

724,928. Hand tools for planting &c. ENGEL, A. Feb. 3, 1953, No. 3063/53. Class 6 (2). In a tool for inserting in the ground and lifting and transplanting plants, blades 1 are freely mounted on a ring 4 which is fixed to tubes 6 which are joined by a handle 7. Rings 13, 14 are attached to rods 15 which slide in the tubes 6 and are joined by a handle 25 which extends through slots in the tubes 6. Webs 12 connect the rings 13, 14 and are provided with pins 10, 11 which run in slots 8, 9 in the blades. The tool is inserted into the ground and the blades are moved longitudinally and inwardly to form a truncated cone. The handle 25 is raised against springs 26 and may be locked by a catch 31. Strippers are arranged inside the cone formed by the blades and are fixed to spring urged rods 27. A long blade 57 is provided for cutting tap roots. In a modification the springs 26 and the ring 13 are omitted and springs are mounted on the rods 15 between the upper and lower rings. The strippers may be mounted on a strap rotatable in a pin mounted on a rod fixed between the tubes 6. The blades may be hinged to the top ring and pressed against the lower ring by an annular spring mounted inside the blades. To encircle a plant the rings are provided with radial slots at one side and the adjacent blades are recessed.
