Abstract
The invention comprises a -propylene glycol bis-(bromoacetate) The compound is prepared by reacting one molecular proportion of a -propylene glycol with at least two molecular proportions of monobromoacetic acid, preferably at a temperature between 50 DEG and 150 DEG C. and in the presence of an esterification catalyst. Concentrated phosphoric and sulphuric acids and toluene sulphonic acid are the catalysts mentioned. Preferably the reactants and catalyst are mixed in a water-immiscible solvent, e.g. toluene or ethylene dichloride and conveniently the reaction is carried out at the boiling point of the reaction mixture when the water produced and the solvent are distilled off and the latter is recycled. In an example a -propylene glycol and monobromoacetic acid are dissolved in ethylene dichloride, and heated with a sulphuric acid catalyst water, solvent being distilled off and the latter recycled. The product may be used in plastic or herbicidal compositions (see Group VI).ALSO:a -Propylene glycol bis (bromoacetate) (see Group IV (b)) is soluble in organic solvents and an active ingredient in contact herbicidal compositions.
