Abstract

724,426. Portable turning apparatus. VILLA, S. Feb. 25, 1953, No. 5278/53. Class 83 (3). Apparatus for machining the linings of motorvehicle brake shoes in situ comprises a body portion rotatably mounted by a bushing on a sleeve fitting round and locked with respect to the stub axle of a vehicle wheel, the body having an operating crank and an adjustable support carrying a tool, the support having two lateral arms and a rotatable screw, the tool being mounted in a holder threaded on the screw and sliding on the lateral arms. A pair of mounting sleeves 21, 28 are selected from a set to suit the wheel stub axle 30 and a sleeve 3 carrying bearings 2 for the rotatable body 1 of the apparatus is secured on the sleeve 21 by a nut 22. The body carries an operating handle 26 at one end and a radially adjustable tool support 5 at the other end. The latter is roughly adjusted to the diameter of the linings 31 and fine adjustment for the cut is obtained through a backing screw 12 for a cutter 23 carried in a holder 8 which is slidable along rods 9 extending at right angles from the support 5. A screw arranged between the rods 9 has threaded engagement with the holder 8 and is rotatable in the support 5 by a Geneva wheel 11, Fig. 2, secured to the end of the rod. The Geneva wheel is engaged by a member 7, Fig. 1, secured to a bracket 6 which does not rotate and is rotated one quarter turn for each rotation of the body 1 to feed the tool across the face of the lining.
