Abstract
724,309. X-ray apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 20, 1953 [March 22, 1952], No. 7781/53. Class 98 (1). [Also in Groups XI and XL (a)] An attachment for heating a specimen within apparatus in which the specimen is examined by a beam of radiant energy, i.e. electromagnetic radiation, e.g. X- rays, gamma rays and particles, e.g. electrons, protons, comprises a body of refractory material 11 having an aperture 12 extending therethrough to permit the passage of the beam and an electric heating element 27 and means 23 for holding the specimen 25 in heat transfer relation to the heater, both heater and holder being located within the aperture 12. The heater comprises a bifilar filament 29 supported on a post 30 eccentrically mounted on a refractory plate 31 carrying the leads 35 of the heater and the leads 37 of a thermocouple 36 measuring the temperature of the aperture 12. The heater extends into the upper part 28 of the aperture 12 in the cylindrical ceramic glass or quartz body 11. A thin metal liner 13 with a wife mesh top 14 extends into the lower part of the aperture below the heater and has a metal end flange 15 facilitating its removal. When the specimen 25 is to be examined by reflection of an electron beam, the upper edges of the specimen are pressed against shoulders 26 of the liner 13 by a leaf spring 24 pressing on the lower surface of the specimen and carried by a flanged tray 23 readily removable from the liner 13 forming an electrostatic shield in the aperture 12. The refractory body 11 is mounted within two "cylindrical radiation shields 16, 17 of tantalum or molybdenum to minimise heat loss by screws 19 engaging an end plate 20 on the inner shield 16. A tongued centrally apertured metal plate 33 is mounted on the outside of the refractory plate 31, which is attached to the cylindrical member 11 by screws 32. Centrally apertured end caps 38-41 further reduce heat loss. When a specimen is to be examined by transmission of an electron beam, it is mounted on a wire mesh 48 retained against a flange 49 of a Banged hollow cylindrical member 45 attached by a strap 46 to a base 42 carrying leaf springs 44 adapted to bear on the shoulders 26 of the lining 13. The specimen holder in a diffraction instrument is mounted on a manipulator with a rod as described in Specification 618,657, [Group XL (a)], which is referred to.
