723,864. Calculating-apparatus. OLYMPIA WERKE WEST GES., [formerly ORBIS BUROMASCHINENWERK GES.]. Dec. 7, 1950 [Dec. 7, 1949], No. 30032/50. Class 106 (1). The function-controlling keys of a calculating- machine coact with presetting members by which a new function can be set whilst the previous function is in progress and so as to follow automatically upon the previous function. In the mechanism shown, functions are set by differential adjustment of one or other of three presetting slides 1, 2 and 3 by means of keys 8, each presetting slide having a companion setting slide 4, 5 and 6 to which it is connected by a tension spring 10 maintaining stops 13, 14 on the two slides in contact. Tooth abutments formed in the upper edges of the setting slides 4, 5 and 6 are engaged, or not, by the inturned ends 50 and 51 of a pair of feelers 47 and 49, when these are lowered at the beginning of a cycle, selectively positioning the feelers according to the machine function. A feeler yoke 33 for controlling positive or negative engagement of the totalizer is also lowered for selective positioning by the setting slide 4. The setting slides 4, 5 and 6 are also formed with rack teeth 20 and, at the commencement of a machine cycle, a further yoke 31 is lowered to engage these rack teeth to secure the setting slides in adjusted position throughout the cycle. If, during the cycle, a new function is set by depressing another key 8, the previous key is released and its presetting slide 1, 2 or 3 restored by its spring 7 and stretching the connecting spring 10. The presetting slide for the new function is differentially positioned against its connecting spring 10, its setting slide, however, now being secured by the yoke 31 until the completion of the existing cycle, whereupon the setting slides, under the action of the springs 10, assume the new position and a further cycle follows immediately upon the first. Subsequent functions can be similarly preset with the machine cycling continuously. Controlling machine function; adding and total-taking. The feelers 47 and 49 control the timing of engagement of the totalizer 42 with its racks (not shown). They are supported by a bail 43, carried between the arms of a yoke 34 pivoted at 31a and normally held raised by a pitman 44 controlled by a pin 74 on a pin plate 78 secured to the main shaft 79. The totalizer 42 is normally engaged and its movements are controlled by a totalizer engaging lever 53 through a cam slot 54 and a pin 55 on an arm 56 of the totalizer rock shaft 57. The engaging lever 53 is pivoted at 52 and extends between the feelers 47 and 49; on either side is pivoted a pawl 46 and 48, each with a pin as 67 normally bearing on the offset upper end of the feeler 47 or 49 under the action of a spring 66 or 68 loading the pawl. If, when lowered, the feeler 47 or 49 is not stopped by a tooth abutment on a setting slide, the pawl 46 or 48 is released to its spring and projected outwardly from the lever 53 for engagement by pins on the plate 78. If, however, the feeler 47 or 49 is stopped by engagement with a tooth on a setting slide, its pawl is retained inactive and clear of the pins of the plate. In addition, no keys 8 are operated and the setting slides remain in the initial positions. During the forward (counterclockwise) stroke of the main shaft 79, the pin 75 first rocks the totalizer engaging lever 53 to disengage the totalizer and the pin 74 releases the pitman 44 to lower the yokes 31 and 33, the former locking the setting slides so that the next function can be set by the keys 8 and the latter engaging a tooth of the slide 4 and so adjusting the totalizer for addition through an arm 37 and lever 39. The feelers 47 and 49 are also lowered, the former entering a gap in the slides 4 and 5 and the latter meeting a tooth. The pawl 46 is consequently projected into active position whilst the pawl 48 remains retracted and inactive. As the forward stroke of the main shaft continues, a pin 76 passes idly over the projected pawl 46 which yields clockwise. On the return stroke, the pin 76, engaging under the pawl 46 now held by contact of its pin 67 on the feeler 47, rocks the totalizer engaging lever clockwise to re-engage the totalizer for the entry of an amount. In subtraction the action is the same except that slide 4 is adjusted by a key 8 to present a gap to the yoke 33 which lowers and adjusts the totalizer for negative entries. In non-add operations, neither feeler 47 or 49 is lowered and the totalizer remains disengaged throughout the cycle. In total-taking operations the feeler 49, but not the feeler 47, is lowered and the pawl 48 becomes active for engagement by the pin 74 to rock the lever 53 to engage the totalizer during the forward stroke of the main shaft, at the end of which the pin 77 restores the lever 56 to disengage the totalizer. For subtotals, both the feelers 47 and 49 are lowered and the totalizer is re-engaged for the return stroke as for addition. When the totalizer passes to a negative condition an obstructing lever 11 is positioned to limit rearward movement of the setting slides; the action in total and subtotal taking is as above except that the yoke 33 lowers to adjust the totalizer for subtraction. Printing mechanism. Abutments 23, 24 and 25 at the rear of the setting slides engage a stepped yoke 26 pivoted on a spindle 29 and provided with a toothed quadrant 28 which is differentially adjusted to set a type wheel to print a symbol corresponding to the selected function.
