Abstract

723,724. Moulding resin-glass from fibre preforms. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Nov. 24, 1952, No. 29659/52. Class 87 (2). Strands S of glass fibres (each strand comprising, say, 200 individual fibres) are fed from spools 56 over a roller 45 having a resilient surface, where they are cut into short lengths S' by knives 49 on a roller 48, the knives forcing the strands into the periphery of the resilient surface so that the strands are folded over the edges of the knives and all the fibres in the strands are cut in the same place. The cut lengths are then blown along a conduit 35, where powdered resin from a vibrating feed 62 is dropped in at 64 to coat the lengths (or the strand may be initially coated with resin) and into a chamber 16 where they are sucked onto a rotating former 20 to form a layer P. Heat is applied to the layer by electrical or gas flame heaters 68, to cure or set the resin and consolidate the layer into a preform which is used for moulding purposes. A fan 28 effects both the blowing and the suction. A preform having the upper or lower or both surfaces formed of individual fibres (the interior being formed of strands) may be made by varying the speed of the rolls 45, 48, the rolls being rotated quickly at the start of a preform-making operation to open out the strands into fibres, then slowly to form the body of the preform from unopened strands, then quickly; this is effected by adjusting the speed of the electric drive 55, 54 to the rollers. When a preform has been thus made a door 70 in chamber 16 is opened, the preform is removed, the door is closed and another cycle is performed. In modifications, (a) Fig. 3, (not shown) filler is fed in with the resin and (electric) heaters are carried by a frame which is raised whilst the strands are being accreted on the former and then lowered into proximity with the accreted layer; (b) Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) the resin is set or cured by hot gases blown onto the accreted layer.
