In a bookbinding machine wherein synthetic glue is applied to the backs 1 as the books are carried between conveyers, one of which is shown at 3, past one or more glueing devices, the glue is circulated by a pump 21 in a closed circuit comprising a reservoir 18, pipes 20, 22, 26, 28 and a manifold 24 having conduits to the glueing devices. In the form shown, three glueing devices 4, 5, 13 with conduits 32, 33, 34 and gate valves 32a etc. are provided, the first, 4, applying glue to the back edges of the leaves and to the very narrow marginal parts of the leaves which have been fanned by the arrangement described in Specification 723,652. After leaving the device 4 the leaves are restored to fully fiat condition and the device 5 applies a second coating to the backs. The third device 13 glues a lining strip 7 which is then applied to the backs by a presser plate 15 whereupon a roller 12 folds the margins of the liner against the top and base of the book. The glueing devices may be as described in Specification 723,736. A freely rotatable brush adjacent each glueing device works the glue into the backs, and the glueing devices and brushes are carried by pivoted brackets 58 so that they can be swung by the operator into and out of operative position. A cutting and roughening device 15a as in Specification 656,931 is preferably provided in advance of the first device 4. After leaving the third glueing device the backs pass against a beater as described in Specification 723,735.
