723,299. Wrenches. GOULD, J. P. E. April 6, 1951. No. 2032/53. Divided out of 723,209 [Group XXVIII]. Class 61. Apparatus for coupling or removing a screw closure connection 16 from an oil well head 11 or other vessel while under fluid pressure comprises a flow control valve C detachably screwed onto external threads on the tubular base A which communicates with the head 11, and a tool D releasably carried by the flow control C. The flow control C has openings 46, 47 at each end and a seat 48 for a plug 49 which has a transverse opening 50 and can be rotated by a handle 51 to establish an opening in communication with the base A. The tool D comprises a closed chamber in a housing threaded at 61 for engagement in the opening 47 of the flow control valve and a shiftable member insertable through the opening 50 in the plug 49 into coupled engagement with the screw closure 26 and retractable to withdraw the closure from the base A through the plug valve. The shiftable member comprises a rod 63 slidable in the end closure 62 of the chamber, the outer end of the rod being secured to a head 66 provided with handles 78. The head is attached to a sleeve 67 surrounding the housing and is sealed against the housing and closure member 62 respectively by packing. Between the packings the outer diameter of the housing is less than the inner diameter of the sleeve 67 to provide an annular chamber the length of which varies according to the position of the sleeve 67, ports being provided to connect the chamber with the interior of the housing. The coupling member comprises a stem 93 having a sleeve 90 by which it is adjustably fixed to the rod 63 by a set screw. A wrench socket 94 to fit the polygonal end 26 of the closure is.provided at the end of the stem 93. A guide element 95 having a spring detent 96 engages within the bore 37 and holds the socket in engagement with the closure. The stem 93 is of less diameter than the diameter of the interior of the housing to provide communication between the interior of the housing and the plug opening 50. As soon as the seal between the screw closure member 26 and tubular base is broken the pressure fluid in the member 11 flows into the housing and through one of the ports into the annular chamber thus causing the rod 63 to move longitudinally.
