Abstract

[Also in Group XV] In a machine for enclosing and thereby sealing the open ends of bags or envelopes by means of adhesive strip, the bag is guided with the adhesive strip 5, Figs. 1, 2, between a feed roller 15 and a pressure roller 20 and one of the rollers, as shown the pressure roller 20, is mounted directly or indirectly on the machine by means of a lockable ball joint 23, 24, 25, Fig. 5, to permit adjustment of the angle between the axes of the feed and pressure rollers. The adhesive strip 5 is guided from a braked spool 6 by a pin 11 and creasing finger 12 through a folding member 13 which folds it along its centre line to trough shape and then together with the bag with its open ends inserted in the trough, it is fed to the feed and pressure rollers 15, 20 which are knurled to provide a light milling of the strips and bag. The feed roller 15 is mounted on a shaft 14 provided with a hand crank 16 and the pressure roller 20 is mounted on a rock shaft 19 carried in a fork 17 rockable on a shaft 21 secured to the frame, a tension spring 18 acting on the fork 17 to urge the pressure roller against the feed roller. The shaft 21 is secured to a support arm 22 of the frame by a disc-type ball joint compressing an inner disc 23, Fig. 5, with an outer convex surface 23a which engages a recess 22b at the inner end of the shaft bearing 22a in the arm 22, whilst two relatively movable outer discs 24, 25 have contacting convex and concave surfaces 24a, 25a. The diameters of the bore of the disc 24 and of the hole 22a are larger than that of the shaft end to permit adjustment as shown in Fig. 5. The shaft 21 is locked in its adjusted position by a nut 26. A manually operated blade 29 pivoted to the frame severs the adhesive strip 5 with the delivery of the bag. The pressure roller 20 may be lifted from the feed roller by a lever 32 pivoted on the fork 17 with its lower end bearing against a rising cam surface on the supporting arm 22.
