Abstract

721,562. Typewriters. SWEENEY, J. L. May 13, 1952, No. 12145/52. Class 100 (4). In a typewriter of the general construction disclosed in, and having a letter-spacing escapement mechanism of the general construction disclosed in Specification 593,193, the adjustable stop 48, Figs. 1 and 3, for the movable clutch 46 is adjusted by control mechanism actuated by the-key levers 16, so that the amount of escapement depends on the width of the type printed. Each lever 16 has two cam rollers 50, one on each side. A cam-shaft 52 is provided with a plurality of pairs of cam members 55, 72, one pair aligned with each key lever, and each having a cam slot shaped according to the width of type corresponding to its aligned key lever. The cams 55 are for lower case letters and the cams 72 for capitals, and the shaft 52 is movable axially by the case-shift mechanism to bring the requisite series of cams into alignment with the rollers 50. Rota. tion of the shaft 52, consequent to depression of a key lever by means of a nose 58 on one of the cams 55 and a link 60, arm 61, rod 62 and arm 66, sets the stop 48 in the correct position. The stop 49 is adjustable by a hand-operating knob through a rod 93, so as to add or subtract a desired increment to or from all the escapement distances for justification purposes. The clutches 45, 46 are clamped and released through the bail 23 as described in Specification 593,193. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 587,724 and 593,193.
