Class 87 (2) Bricks or a column of clay which is subsequently to be cut in bricks are fed on to a conveyer 16 which carries them through a hopper 34. Granular material, e.g. sand or powdered glass, is fed into the hopper through a wire-mesh screen at the top. The hopper is mounted on resilient mountings 36 and is vibrated by an electric motor 41 in order that the sand may be evenly distributed over the bricks. Rubber strips 37 restrict the escape of sand. Heating elements 46 are provided to warm the sand and thus soften the' outer surface of the bricks to facilitate the embedding of the sand therein. Excess sand is removed by fixed or resiliently mounted scrapers 47, 48 and 49, 51 and falls into a trough 53 having a right- and left-hand worm conveyer which feeds the sand towards the centre of the trough. A spring- 86 urged roller 85 forces the bricks down into contact with the sand in the trough 53 to sand the bottom surface of each brick. After sanding, the sand is forced into the bricks by beater plates 62, 63, 65 which are vibrated by cams. In a modification, the plates are replaced by rollers, which may be heated. The bricks are separated from each other to facilitate their removal by tilting the conveyer 17 upwards by a roller 87.
