Abstract
Germicidal solid iodine-containing compositions are prepared by reacting iodine, urea and a non-ionic surface-active agent. The iodine and surface-active agent may be first reacted and the compound so formed be then reacted with urea at, say, 15-100 DEG C. In either case, reaction with urea may take place in the presence of an inert diluent such as isopentane or isohexane and an activator for the urea, said activator constituting not more than 25 per cent based on the weight of the surface-active agent, and being water, methanol or aqueous methanol, the reaction product being recovered by filtration and/or centrifuging. The iodine may constitute up to 30 per cent of the surface-active agent, and the ratio of the latter to urea is 1 : 1 to 1 : 2 by weight. The surface-active agents suitably have the formul R1COO(CH2CH2O)n -CH2CH2OH and R2-O-(CH2CH2O)n-CH2 CH2OH, where R1 and R2 are alkyl groups of 5-50 C atoms, R3-A-O-(CH2CH2O)n-CH2CH2OH, where R3 is an alkyl group of 8-12 C atoms and A is an aromatic group, and R4-S-(CH2CH2O)nCH2CH2OH, where R4 is an alkyl group of 10 C atoms, n being 5-50 in all cases. Examples are given. Specification 643,456 is referred to.ALSO:Germicidal soild iodine-containing compositions are prepared by reacting iodine, urea and a non-ionic surface active agent. The iodine and surface active agent may be first reacted and the compound so formed be then reacted with urea at say 15-100 DEG C. In either case, reaction with urea may take place in the presence of an inert diluent such as isopentane or isohexane and an activator for the urea, said activator constituting not more than 25 per cent. based on the weight of the surface active agent, and being water, methanol or aqueous methanol, the reaction product being recovered by filtration and/or centrifuging. The iodine may constitute up to 30 per cent. of the surface active agent, and the ratio of the latter to urea is 1 : 1 to 1 : 2 by weight. The surface active agents suitably have the formulae R1COO (CH2 CH2 O)n -CH2 CH2 OH and R2-O-(CH2 CH2O)n-CH2 CH2 OH., where R1 and R2 are alkyl groups of 5-50 C atoms, R3-A-O-(CH2 CH2 O)n-CH2 CH2 OH, where R3 is an alkyl group of 8-12 C atoms and A is an aromatic group, and R4-S-(CH2 CH2 O)n CH2 CH2 OH, where R4 is an alkyl group of 10 C atoms, n being 5-50 in all cases. Examples are given. The disadvantages of elemental iodine e.g. high vapour pressure, staining, attack on the skin, &c. are said to be reduced or eliminated by the compounds of the invention. Reference is made to known "iodophors", consisting of iodine in combination with surface-active agents, e.g. e.g. alkylphenoxypolyglycol ethers. Specification 643,456, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.
