A dispenser of self adhesive tape comprises a number of feed discs 19 having irregular peripheral edges for engaging the adhesive side of the tape and a number of stripping discs 22 also having irregular edges adapted to be spaced intermediate the feed discs and to overlap them so that as the discs are rotated the stripping discs disengage the tape from the feed discs and enable it to be delivered or withdrawn from the dispenser. The feed discs are driven by an electric motor controlled by a switch 41 which is actuated by a cover element 65 or by the support for a severing member 71. For this purpose one of the arms 74 supporting the severing member 71 is provided with an extension which is slotted as at 76 and loosely engages a pin 77 on the cover element 65 and is also provided with an arm 79 adapted to actuate the switch 41. The arm 74 is pivoted to a normally stationary lower cover plate 29 so that in the event of either the cover element 65 being raised by the tape being grasped and pulled against its lower edge 69 or by depressing the severing member 71, the switch 41 is actuated to effect operation of the motor and a feeding of the tape. Feeding is stopped when the tape on the serving member is released. The stripping discs 22 are mounted on a shaft geared to the shaft carrying the feed discs the gear ratio being such that the peripheral speed of the stripping discs is greater than that of the feed discs thereby lessening the tendency for the tape to adhere to the stripping discs. In the event of the tape so adhering to the stripping discs a comb 85 is provided adapted to engage between the discs 22 and remove the tape. The switch 41 is pivoted and may be swung to either an operative or inoperative position. The cover plate 29 to which is also attached the cover element 65 can be swung to an open position, Fig. 5, and in so doing causes the switch 41 to move to its inoperative position. The switch may then if desired be moved back to its operative position but is again moved to its inoperative position upon closure of the cover plate 29. The severing member 71, which may be adjustable angularly, has a stripper 73 for disengaging the tape from the cutter in the event of it adhering thereto after it has been severed. The action of severing the tape also serves to prevent feeding by pivoting the arms 74 in the reverse direction to the switch actuating direction.
