Abstract

A process for the production of alkali metal salts of nitroalkanes and nitro-cycloalkanes by the reaction of the nitro compounds with aqueous alkali solutions consists in causing caustic alkali solutions, preferably of greater concentration than 15 per cent by weight, to act on the nitro compounds in the presence of from about 0.5 to 10 per cent by weight of oximes with reference to the amount of nitro compound used. Nitro compounds p mentioned are the nitro derivatives of methane, ethane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, cyclo-octane and their homologues, butanes, pentanes, decanes and hexadecanes, 2- and 1-nitropropanes and o -nitrotoluene. Any aldehyde or ketone oxime, preferably that corresponding to the nitro compound, may be used. In examples: (1) caustic soda solution is added to nitrocyclohexanone in which cyclohexanone oxime is dissolved, the sodium salt of aci-nitrocyclohexane being precipitated; (2) aqueous caustic potash solution is used in place of aqueous caustic soda; (3) aqueous caustic soda solution is added to a mixture of nitroalkanes (obtained by the gas-phase nitration of gasoline) containing dissolved acetone oxime, to give the sodium salts of the aci-nitroalkanes.
