Abstract

Compounds containing epoxy groups are polymerized in presence of an ion-exchange resin containing a plurality of sulphonic acid groups. Epoxy compounds mentioned are diglycidyl ethers of dihydric phenols; mixed ethers of dihydric phenols, e.g. the glycidyl allyl ether of bisphenol; glycidyl acetate; diglycidyl phthalate; ethylene oxide; propylene oxide; 3,4-epoxy butyl-, 2,3-epoxy butyl-, or 2,3-epoxy-2-methyl-propyl-derivatives of polyhydric phenols; epoxy containing phenol aldehyde condensates as described in Specifications 721,149 and 721,151; glycidyl or epoxyalkyl derivatives of phenol, cresols, xylenols, naphthols, t-butyl phenols, styryl phenols, or hydroxy diphenyl; styrene oxide; vinyl cyclohexene dioxide; butadiene oxide. Ion-exchange resins mentioned are sulphonated styrene-divinyl benzene copolymers; sulphonated phenol aldehyde condensates, including those from alkyl phenols or polyhydric phenols; sulphonated coal; sulphonated tannin-formaldehyde resins; phenol-formaldehyde resins containing omega-sulphonic acid residues. The reaction may proceed at room temperature or with heating to 100-150 DEG C. Removal of heat is necessary in case of exothermic reactions. The amount of ion exchange resin may be catalytic, e.g. 0.5 per cent, or even less, of the epoxy compound, or amounts up to 50 per cent by weight of the epoxy resin may be employed. Other known catalysts for epoxy compounds, e.g. amines such as diethyl amine, trimethyl amine or butyl amine may be used together with the ion exchange resins. The products may be moulded and worked mechanically. Fillers, e.g. asbestos or wood flour, plasticizers, dyes and lubricants may be incorporated. By addition of solvents, plasticizers or drying oils, adhesives or coating compositions may be produced. In example I sulphonated styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer is heated at 120 DEG C. for 1 hour and then at 170 DEG C. for 30 minutes with the diglycidyl ether of p,p1 - dihydroxydiphenyldimethylmethane. II. Sulphonated phenol-formaldehyde resin is heated at 120 DEG C. for 1 hour with the diglycidyl ether of resorcinol.
