Abstract
720,827. Shearing. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. March 19, 1953, No. 7689/53. Class 83 (4). A rotary shear for severing a longitudinally travelling rod or the like comprises two cooperating cutting discs mounted on parallel rotatable shafts and positioned at an acute angle to the line of rod travel and adapted to sever the rod as it is deflected laterally between them, a housing rotatably supporting one of the shafts and hinged to a support structure and a pitman rod lifted and lowered by an eccentric to swing the housing about its hinge to separate the discs and allow the rod to pass back between them. An upper cutting disc 10, on rotated shaft 12 provided with a flywheel 17 and mounted in a housing 16 pivoted at 26 ona base 23, co-operates with a lower cutting disc 11, on a rotated shaft 19 provided with a flywheel 21 and mounted in a housing 20 also pivoted at 26 to the base 23, to sever a length from a metal rod, fed longitudinally along a guide channel 80 inclined to the plane of the discs and given a transverse movement to pass the rod, for cutting, between the discs. In order, after cutting, to allow the rod to pass back to its original position, the discs are moved apart by swinging the housings 16, 20 about their pivot 26, the lower housing being guided by spaced fingers 32 on the base 23 and the upper housing by spaced fingers 34 on the lower housing. The swinging of the upper housing 16 is effected by pitman rods 53 mounted at their lower ends on eccentrics 52 on a shaft 51 and at their upper ends on pins 54 eccentrically carried by a shaft 55 adjustable in the housing 16 to compensate for wear of the disc. A bifurcated pitman rod 72 mounted on eccentrics 71 on the shaft 51 is adjustably connected to the lower housing 20. The eccentrics are so mounted on the shaft 51 that they are located in dead centre position when the discs are in their cutting position. The shaft 51 is oscillated by a hydraulically-operated rack 62, adjustable stops 69 limiting movement of the pitman rods.
