Abstract
720,325. Strain gauges. SAUNDERS-ROE, Ltd., and JACKSON, P. G. S. May 27, 1953 [May 29, 1952; Aug. 21, 1952], Nos. 13671/52 and 21008/52. Class 40 (1) A strain gauge is made by applying, as a printed circuit, to a flexible insulating backing a resistor in the form of a grid or two interlaced spirals. One, or as shown in Fig. 2, a plurality of resistance grids 11 may be printed on a flexible insulating backing 10 preferably of lacquer, paper or plastic of thickness .011-.002 inches, by the process described in Specification 639,178, [Group XXXVI], The narrow resistor strips 12 of each grid are joined by wider portions 13 and end in enlarged terminals 14 to which leads may be soldered or welded. A 50 per cent. copper, 50 per cent. nickel or a gold-silver alloy may be used as resistor material Fig. 3 shows a double spiral form of resistor for measuring strains in diaphragms. For measuring shaft torsion a strip 10, Fig. 4 (not shown), is wrapped around and cemented to the shaft 35, Fig. 5. The strip carries two resistor grids 31, 31A arranged herring- bone fashion circumferentially of the shaft. They vary differentially with torsion and may be connected in a bridge circuit. Sections of the resistors 31, 31A defined by terminals 34 may be individually connected as arms in a bridge circuit.
