Abstract
719,435. Travelling-wave tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES. Ltd. Nov. 6, 1952 [Nov. 9, 1951], No. 27982/52. Addition to 704,378. Class 39(1). In a discharge tube for generating, amplifying or modulating millimetre waves and having a resonant circuit comprising a plurality of generally parallel coplanar wires stretched on a conductive frame, their spacing being small compared with their length, which is about #/2, and the voltages on adjacent wires being in phase opposition, and in which the electron beam passes normally to the axes of the wires but parallel to the plane in which they lie, as described for example in the parent Specification, adjacent wires 3, 4, Fig. 2 are slightly inclined in opposite directions to the mean direction of their axes so that the distances between adjacent ends of the wires are alternately smaller and greater than the mean distance the ratio between the smaller and greater distance lying in the range 0.7 to 0.9. This ensures that adjacent wires will oscillate in phase opposition with voltage nodes at their ends. The resonant circuit is constructed by winding wire on a frame in a left handed winding operation followed by a right handed winding operation, and removing the wires on one side of the frame after the remainder have been fixed to the frame by soldering. The frame is of molybdenum sheet. Dimensions of an example are given.
