Abstract

Lubricants or surface coating compositions are prepared by reacting a metal soap-forming compound and an aliphatic acid ester of a monohydric alcohol boiling below 281 DEG F., at elevated temperature in the presence of a liquid polyorganosiloxane. The esters may be formed from alcohols having 1-5 carbon atoms and acids having at least 9 carbon atoms. Acids referred to are perlargonic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachic, behenic, hydroxystearic, polyhydroxystearic, undecylenic, oleic and ricinoleic acids; acids obtained from tallow, lard and seed oils; wool fat, naphthenic, rosin and tall oil acids; acids produced by the oxidation of paraffin wax or of other hydrocarbons; and montan wax and beeswax acids. Metal soap-forming compounds specified are the hydroxides, oxides, carbonates and acetates of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Be, Mg, Ca, Zn, Sr, Cd, Ba, Hg, Al, Sn, Pb, Cr, Mn, Co and Ni. Liquid polyorganosiloxanes specified are polymers of dimethyl, diethyl, ethyl phenyl and methyl phenyl silicones. The compositions may be liquid lubricants or greases, and may be prepared by batch or continuous processes; examples are given of the preparation of the compositions. Phenylenediamine may be added to the compositions; water may also be added, for example to the calcium soap greases.ALSO:Metal soaps are obtained by reacting a metal soap-forming compound and an aliphatic acid ester of a monohydric alcohol boiling below 281 DEG F., at elevated temperature, for example 100-500 DEG F., in the presence of a non-saponifiable lubricant and/or surface-coating base material. The esters may be formed from alcohols having 1-5 carbon atoms and acids having at least 9 carbon atoms. Acids referred to are perlargonic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachic, behenic, hydroxystearic, polyhydroxystearic, undecylenic, oleic and ricinoleic acids; acids obtained from tallow, lard, and seed oils; wool fat, naphthenic, rosin and tall oil acids; acids produced by the oxidation of paraffin wax or of other hydrocarbons; and montan wax and beeswax acids. Metal soap-forming compounds specified are the hydroxides, oxides, carbonates and acetates of Li, Na, K, Pb, Cs, Be, Mg, Ca, Zn, Sr, Cd, Ba, Hg, Al, Sn, Pb, Cr, Mn, Co and Ni. The base material is a mineral oil, mineral wax, chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon, chlorinated aromatic ether or liquid polyorganosiloxane; specific compounds mentioned are paraffin and microcrystalline waxes, chlorinated diphenyl, chlorinated diphenyl oxide and polymers of dimethyl, diethyl, ethyl phenyl and methyl phenyl silicones. Normal or basic salts may be prepared. In examples, the preparation of the lithium salt of hydrogenated castor oil fatty acids, barium ricinoleate, lead oleate and aluminium stearate is described.ALSO:Soap-containing lubricants and surface coating compositions are prepared by reacting a metal soap-forming compound and an aliphatic acid ester of a monohydric alcohol boiling below 281 DEG F., at elevated temperature in the presence of a non-saponifiable lubricant and/or surface-coating base material. The esters may be formed from alcohols having 1-5 carbon atoms and acids having at least 9 carbon atoms. Metal soap-forming compounds specified are the hydroxides, oxides, carbonates and acetates of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Be, Mg, Ca, Zn, Sr, Cd, Ba, Hg, Al, Sn, Pb, Cr, Mn, Co, and Ni. The lubricant or surface-coating base material is a mineral oil, mineral wax, chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon, chlorinated aromatic ether, or liquid polyorganosiloxane; specific compounds mentioned are paraffin and microcrystalline waxes, chlorinated diphenyl, chlorinated diphenyl oxide and polymers of dimethyl, diethyl, ethyl phenyl and methyl phenyl silicones. The compositions may be liquid lubricants or greases, and may be prepared by batch or continuous processes; examples are given of the preparation of the compositions.
