Class 106(5) [Also in Group XVII] A device for dispensing measured quantities of powdered or granulated material from a container or carton 28 comprises a hollow body 20 having a filling opening 26 in its upper peripheral wall and a discharge opening 23 at its end so that when the container is partially inverted, Fig. 3, a measured quantity of powder flows into the body and is retained there by restoring the container to its upright condition, until it is discharged by tilting the container sideways so that the discharge opening faces downwards. As shown in Fig. 1, the device has a closed pointed end 22 for piercing first one wall and then the other wall of the container until a flange 25 abuts the first wall; the pointed end may have barbs 22<SP>1</SP> Fig. 4, to assist in locating it and a rib 27 or upturned lip may be provided to indicate the position of the filling slot 26. In the device shown in Fig. 6, the leading end abuts against the rear wall of the carton and is located there by spikes 37 or self-sealing adhesive; the front wall of the carton is initially pierced by another tool, or has weakening lines, and a bead 38 locates the device against this wall. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 9, the tapered end 33 is open for the discharge of the powder and may be sharpened to assist in penetrating the carton and may be threaded to take a securing nut 35. For varying the quantity measured, a shutter may be provided to adjust the length or width of the filling opening or the device may be fitted close to the top of the container and rotated to blank off part of the filling opening, which is then preferably a helical slot or line of holes. The device shown in Fig. 13 has a filling opening 44 and discharge opening 47 and is fitted to the exterior of the carton with the flanges 45 gripping a hole in the carton and the flanges 46 engaging the top and sides of the carton. The discharge opening is at one or other end of the device, according to whether it is to be used by a right- or left-handed person, or it may be open at both ends and one of them closed by fitting a removable cover or a sleeve closed at one end.
