718,465. Starch sizes. SPRINGS COTTON MILLS. June 27, 1952, No. 16227/52. Class 121 In making starch pastes for sizing yarns an aqueous starch slurry 4 is circulated. by a pump 12. driven by a motor 14, from an open vat 2 through a closed cooking chamber 18 heated, e.g. to 210‹F., by live steam from a perforated pipe 24, and is returned to the vat firstly through a pipe 20, having a cross-section smaller than that of the chamber and then through the air as a jet 30. A throttle valve 26 may be placed in the pipe 20 to control the pressure in the chamber 18. A thermocouple 32 may control the operation of a valve 36 in the steam supply pipe 22 to keep the slurry at a desired temperature. A valve 42 in the pipe 22 may be closed and a motor switch 44 opened, to stop cooking and circulation in response to the attainment of a desired slurry viscosity as sensed by an element 38 in the vat. The response may be made through a recording controller 40. The control circuit to the valve 42 may be broken at a manually operated switch 46 so that the motor can operate with the valve 42 closed.
