Abstract

718,368. Thermally-actuated valves. WALKER CROSWELLER & CO., Ltd. March 31, 1952 [April 14, 1951], No. 8728/51. Class 135. A mixing device for fluids at different temperatures, e.g. hot and cold water, comprises a base 1 with fluid inlets 2, 3 ending in chambers 6, 7, respectively surrounding a well 5 and opening into ports 11, 12, e.g. in a sleeve 10 closely fitting in the well, and an open-ended cylindrical valve 18 having staggered ports 20, 21 on a level with the ports 11, 12 respectively accommodated wholly in the well and rotatable through a hub 28 having a yoke 24 engaging, e.g. slots in the top of the valve and actuated by a bimetal coil having its innermost turn secured to the hub. A cover 26 forms a mixing chamber and two coils are secured together at their outer ends by a plate 29, one 27 being secured to the hub and the other 30 to a temperature setting spindle 25 rotatable within the hub. Rotation of the valve is limited by a projection moving in a cut-out portion of the sleeve-securing flange 13. The mixed fluids are directed upwards around the coils and down a side passage to the outlet. In a modification, the valve is integral with a stub spindle carrying the coil 27, the coil 30 being secured to a hub rotatable on this spindle while the hub has a claw and slot connection with the temperature setting knob 32.
