Abstract
717,785. Treating organic waste and household refuse. PICO, R. BOGGIANO-. April 18, 1952 [April 20, 1951], No. 9852/52. Class 111. [Also in Group XXX] An installation for the conversion of household refuse and organic waste into sterile or fertilizing material by treating with an oxidizing gas during fermentation comprises at least one chamber charged through its top from a conveyer which is itself fed at a charging station equipped with a grinder, the chamber having means for distributing oxidizing gas to its interior, stirring apparatus mounted movably above it and at least one closable aperture at the base, through which fermented material is discharged on to a conveyer. In operation material from a pit 1 Fig. 3, is fed through one of a plurality of grinders 3 to an inclined conveyer belt 5 delivering to a belt 27 arranged longitudinally of a plurality of chambers 6. The material is transferred to a lateral belt 29 mounted on a travelling gantry 9 and thence down a shute 31, Fig. 11, into the chosen chamber 6 where it is subjected to the fermenting action of warm humid ozonized air supplied by a motor driven compressor through apertured pipes 16, Fig. 6, secured by stirrups 17 to cross-beams 18. Gas resulting from the fermentation is withdrawn from the chamber through a separate system of pipes and a motor driven suction pump. Transfer of material from the longitudinal belt 27 to the lateral belt 29 is effected by providing at the belt end of the gantry 9 a carriage 34, Fig. 10, having rollers 32, 33 over which the belt 27 passes to provide an overhanging portion whereby material falls on to a shoot 30 leading to the belt 29. A similar carriage 35, Fig. 11, transfers the material from the belt 29 to the shute 31 delivering to the chamber 6. Discharge of fermented material through a bottom opening 13 controlled by sliding doors 14 is assisted by a finned drill 44, Fig. 13, rotated by a motor 45 and allowed to fall under gravity after being raised by a winch 43 ; the so discharged material being conveyed by a belt 36 to a reversible transverse belt 37 whereby it is conveyed to a dump 38 or a charging station 39.
