Abstract
<PICT:0717440/IV (a)/1> A composition comprises a polysulphone resin and an organic phosphoric acid derivative having a boiling point above 250 DEG F., a molecular weight between 120 and 1,000 and containing no aliphatic group of more than 6 carbon atoms. Materials specified are tributyl, triphenyl, tri-o-cresyl and triethyl phosphates. The polysulphone resins may be derived from mono-olefins, cyclo-olefins, styrene, butadiene, isoprene, cyclohexadiene, acetylenes, allyl alcohol, vinyl acetate, allyl ethyl ether, o-allylanisole, o-allylphenol, p-bromo-allylbenzene, methyl undecylenate, undecylenyl alcohol, undecylenic acid and mixtures. The compositions may be prepared by mixing an aqueous emulsion of the resin, pH desirably from 3 to 8, with an aqueous dispersion of the plasticizer. Preferably the process is continuous and the resin from reactor 11 is purified in the stripper chamber 13, the pH is adjusted in chamber 17 and the latex mixed with the plasticizer dispersion in chamber 21. The emulsifier for the plasticizer dispersion may be selected from long chain alkyl sulphates and sulphonates, aryl and alkaryl sulphonates, fatty acid soaps, rosin acid soaps, condensation products of an alkyl phenol and ethylene oxide, heptadecyl-amine-epichlor-hydrin and dodecylamine hydrochloride. The latex may be used as such or coagulated to give a plasticized resin. Examples describe the appearance and stability of various compositions.
