Abstract

Emulsions of mineral oil in water contain the acid reaction product of the condensation product of alkanolamines and fatty acids in amounts of at least 50 per cent. of the weight of the mineral oil, the water content of the solution being 25 to 95 per cent. or more. In a modification, where the fatty acid condensation product is derived from a mixture of 60 to 65 per cent. of a dialkanolamine and 40 to 35 per cent. of a trialkanolamine, this product may be used as such, instead of its acid reaction product. The acid reaction products may be made by treating the said condensation products with acids such as sulphuric, phosphoric or acetic acids, or with acid salts such as monosodium phosphate, at room temperature or the acid may simply be added to an emulsion of mineral oil, water and the fatty acid-alkanolamine condensation product. The emulsifiers derived from dialkanolamines only may be used in amounts from 60 to 200 per cent. by weight of the oil, depending on the boiling point of the oil used, but generally about equal weights of emulsifier and oil are used. The emulsifiers are preferably derived from mixtures of di- and trialkanolamines preferably containing 60 to 70 per cent. to 40 to 45 per cent. of the respective alkanolamines. Such mixtures may contain 1 to 3 per cent. of monoalkanolamines. The emulsifiers derived from such mixtures may be used in amounts down to 50 per cent. of the mineral oil. The condensation products may be derived from 2 mols of lialkanolamine and 1 mol of fatty acid such as coconut fatty acids, but when using mixtures of alkanolamines only 1.75 mols are required per mol of fatty acid. Clear solutions are obtained when the emulsifiers and mineral oil are dissolved in water and these may be greatly diluted without any separation of phases. The emulsions may be used in the textile industry as spinning oils and brightening agents. Specifications 306,116, [Class 2 (iii)], 337,737 and 337,774, [both in Class 1 (i)], and U.S.A.
