Abstract

716,939. Aerials. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON), Ltd. Aug. 24, 1953 [Aug. 22, 1952], No. 21180/52. Addition to 700,868. Class 40 (7) The invention consists of a radio aerial system of the type described in the parent Specification wherein the auxiliary reflector placed in front of the waveguide horn source collimates the waves and directs them through the half-wave plate to the main reflector which reflects them back through the " plate." The plate rotates the plane of polarization of the waves through 90 degrees and enables them to pass back through the auxiliary reflector, and the main reflector and halfwave plate are mounted so that they may be inclined to the axis of the auxiliary reflector. In the embodiment shown, energy is propagated along waveguide 2 having shorter sides 2a and radiated by horn 3 in the direction of auxiliary reflector 4. Reflector 4 comprises a number of flat parallel metallic strips 5 arranged in a solid dielectric supporting medium with their edges nearest the horn 3 contained in a paraboloidal surface. The spacing between adjacent strips 5 is somewhat less than half a wavelength and they are located in planes parallel to the walls 2a so that energy from the horn is reflected as a parallel beam towards the main reflector 1 which is apertured to receive the primary element 3. Above the reflector 1 is placed a half-wave plate 7 with its parallel metallic strips 8 in planes at 45 degrees to those containing the strips 5. The beam passes through the half-wave plate, is reflected by the reflector 1, and then passes back through the plate, suffering a total change in its plane of polarization of 90 degrees which enables it to pass out through auxiliary reflector 4 without substantial loss. The main reflector 1 and halfwave plate 7 are secured together to form a reflecting unit which is mounted on trunnions 10 received in bearings 11 in a frame 12 so that the unit can rotate about an axis parallel with the front edges of strips 8. The frame 12 is itself provided with trunnions 14 supported in bearings 15 in a fixed support so that angular movement of the reflecting unit is possible about two axes at right angles. The movement may be effected by operating motor 17 coupled to a cam followed by finger device 19, and motor 21 directly driving trunnion 15. The auxiliary reflector 4 may constitute the front portion of an aircraft radome and the half-wave plate be constructed in " eggbox " form if desired.
