Abstract
<PICT:0716849/III/1> <PICT:0716849/III/2> In producing carbon black by the injection of hydrocarbons into a turbulent stream of hot blast flame gases passing through an elongated reaction chamber, the said gases are supplied to the reaction chamber as separate highly turbulent streams converging towards one another at 60-120 degrees and toward the upstream extention of the reaction chamber at 30-60 degrees, preferably symmetrically; hydrocarbons are injected into the so-formed zone of impact and the mixture passed in a state of violent turbulence through the reaction chamber. An apparatus having the preferred features is shown in horizontal cross-section in Fig. 4. The reaction chamber 1 is lined with heat insulating material 2 and is of rectangular cross-section, having the height greater than the width. The combustion chambers 5 (of which there may alternatively be more than one pair oppositely positioned and uniformly spread over the height of the reaction chamber) are of similar construction and equipped with the type of blast burners described in Specification 654,340; they should together be of transverse area at least equal to the maximum transverse area of the reaction chamber, but may greatly exceed it. Liquid make hydrocarbons, to which the invention specially applies are introduced as finely divided sprays through any or all of nozzles 15, preferably constructed as described in Specifications 692,129 or 692,130, and meet the blast flame gases at about 2-3000 DEG F. It is found particularly advantageous to use the opposing vertical burners only to avoid contact of injected hydrocarbons with the opposite wall. The cross-section of the reaction chamber may be uniform but is preferably reduced as described in Specification 715,713 downstream of the confluence of the combustion gas streams. The combustion chambers may also be tapered toward the zone of impact if desired. Carbons of suitable adjustment of operating conditions: examples are given. U.S.A.
