[Also in Group XXII] Work handling apparatus for a stamping or other press comprises a frame B, Fig. I, fixed adjacent the press 10, a guide 39 pivoted thereto at 29, a slide 38 travelling along the guide towards and from the press, a work gripper 53 on the slide and cam means 63, 65 on the frame and slide which causes the guide to tilt about its pivot when the slide travels. This may be affected by fluid pressure controlled in timed relation by the press. Adjustably secured on the frame member 15 by a clamp 19 is a structure comprising a plate 18, carrying a housing 24 for the electrical and pneumatic control mechanism and the cam 63, and two spaced brackets 27 between which is pivoted, at 29, a block 31 carrying the guide 39 and a cylinder 32 which moves the slide 38. The press drives a shaft 70 having cams to operate switches 68; when the work 12 is ready to be removed, to admit air pressure to the pipe 75a and open to exhaust the pipe 74, the apparatus being in the normal position shown. The pipe 73a supplies the right hand end of the cylinder 32 through a port 78, Fig. 6, so that the piston 34 and slide 38 move to the left slowly until a stub 75 is withdrawn from a recess 76 and uncovers the main port 77. The pipe also supplies the left hand end of a cylinder 48, adjustably mounted on the slide 38, to force rapidly to the right its piston rod 51 and a slide 53 having teeth 54 to engage the upper face of the work 12 and a pivoted chisel 59, which passes under the edge of the work and, when its tail 57a, Fig. 2, engages a stop 55, swings into work holding position X shown in broken-lines just before the rapid movement of the slide 38 begins. Then, as the slide 38 and the parts carried thereby move to the left, a roller 65 on said slide engages the cam 63 thus tilting the guide 39 &c., to move the work successively into the positions Y and Z. At the end of its stroke the slide 38 operates a switch 79 thereby reversing the function of the pipes 73a, 74 to cause the work holding jaws to open and the slide 38 &c., to return to normal position. There may be a delayed action device as shown in Fig. 6 to ensure that the work is released before the slide 38 returns rapidly. In a modification a device for pushing a fresh blank between the dies is operated by a pneumatic cylinder connected by flexible tubing to the the pipes 73a, 74.
