716,082. Stamping sheet material. AKTIEBOLAGET SVETSMEKANO. Aug. 29, 1952 [Aug. 31, 1951], No. 21758/52. Class 100 (2). [Also in Groups V and XXII] In a machine for pressing vents or gill openings 1, Fig. 1, with rounded end portions 2, 3 in sheet metal or pastics a die in which the vents are formed by a reciprocating punch has surfaces corresponding to the intermediate and end portions of the vents and is adjustable relative to the punch to bring the required surface into operative position. In one example, a vertically reciprocating punch 4, Fig. 2, has a curved forming surface 10 of part spherical form of the internal shape of the end portions 2, 3 of the gill openings 1. The die 5, Fig. 4, has an intermediate forming surface 25 of generally arcuate form with end portions 26, 27 of the outside shape of the ends 2, 3 of the gill openings. The die is pivoted by a vertical pin 17 on a mounting plate 15 and is turned and locked in the required position by a handle 18 engaging locking slots 21, 22, 23 in the plate 15. A flat face 11 on the die 5 forms a cutting edge 12 which co-operates with a fixed knife 14. In operation, the plate 15 is first lowered in the machine frame 8 or the stroke of the punch 4 is shortened so that the cutting edge 12 just engages the knife 14 as the punch 4 reciprocates to cut the slit for the vent 1 along its length. The plate 15 is then raised so that the die and punch fully engage to form the gill opening. In carrying out the succeeding operation on the next adjacent vent the plate is located in position by the engagement of the formed vent with a curved surface 28 on the knife 14. In a modification (not shown) a similarly shaped die is arranged to pivot about a horizontal pin, and in another modification the die 36, Fig. 8, is in the form of a shaped disc attached to a handle 38 pivoted on a pin 39 in line with the axis of the punch 1, so that the die may be moved to the side of the punch to form the ends of the vents. In a further modification a punch 42, Fig. 9, engages a die 44 having a recess 45 the shape of the intermediate portion of the vent 1 and over which a removable die portion 46, Fig. 10, with a handle 51 is fitted when the ends of the vents are being formed. The portion 46 has left and right-handed forming recesses 49 for each end, and other recesses 50 corresponding to the intermediate shape so that it may be turned over to form each end of the vent. A pin or snap lock is inserted through apertures 52, 53 to lock the parts together.
