Abstract

Substantially spherical, refractory bodies suitable for use as heat transfer media and/or as supports for catalytic materials are produced by incorporating a liquid adjuvant in a finely ground material comprising silica and alumina, the alumina content being from 72 to 42 per cent. by weight, mixing to a plastic mass, dividing, moulding the pieces into substantially spherical bodies between two surfaces between which there is relative motion, carefully heating to drive off and/or decompose the adjuvant, and then heating strongly, e.g. at 1450-1550 DEG C., to convert at least 70 per cent. of the alumina and silica content into mullite. The starting material may consist of a mixture of alumina and silica, or, say, sillimanite, kyanite, andalusite or kaolin to which alumina may be added. Up to 2 per cent. magnesia may also be incorporated. Suitable liquid adjuvants are water, mineral oil, diluted molasses, tragacanth mucilage, solutions of sugar or starch, greases, petroleum jellies. In the production of the bodies, the plastic mass is rolled into rods between two moving parallel rubber bands, the rods being cut and simultaneously rolled between corrugated surfaces; alternatively, the rods are cut into short lengths which are moulded between two parallel rubber bands moving in opposite directions and at different speeds, the upper band also having a lateral reciprocating motion. The diameter of the bodies is suitably 3/4 in.- 1/16 in. Specifications 608,849, 628,321 and 630,549, [all in Group XIII], are referred to. The Provisional Specification discloses (i) the granulation of a mixture of alumina, kaolin and water or molasses solution in a drum or paddle mixer, prior to drying and heating, (ii) pelleting, e.g. with punches and dies, to give bi-convex pellets of granules produced as at (i) above, but using graphite as a lubricant, and (iii) pelleting as at (ii) above, but using dies to give bodies having hemispherical ends joined by a short cylindrical section.
