Abstract

715,863. Drying discrete materials. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES. Ltd. June 22, 1953 [July 9, 1952], No. 17294/52. Class 34(2) In a process for continuously drying discrete materials the material is passed upwards through a helical elevating vibratory conveyer at lest part of the helical trough of which is heated. An electrically heated trough 1 is enclosed by an outer cylinder 2 of metal and an inner cylinder 3 of an insulating material, the trough being separated from the cylinder 2 by an insulator 4. Near the top of the trough an air supply pipe 5 enters through the inner cylinder 3 and an exit pipe 6 near the base of the drier leads the air to a condenser 7, fan 8 and thence to the heater 9 whence it passes again to the trough in countercurrent to the material which is supplied from a hopper 10 to a vibrating conveyer 11, surrounded by a flexible tube 12 to prevent escape of warm air, and thence to the trough 1, dried material leaving through an outlet 13. The drier is supported on a base 14 through resilient links 15 and is vibrated by means of a motor-driven hydraulic piston assembly having a receiver 16. The trough is uniformly heated or a relatively small length at the point of entry has maximum heat applied and the heating is reduced over the remainder, the latter part being unheated. The thickness of the layer of material is preferably not more than 0.25 inch and among the materials dried are cereals, dyestuffs, chemical salts, hygroscopic materials and polymeric materials such as polyvinyl chloride, polytetrafluoroethylene polythene and polymethyl methacrylate.
