Abstract

Dichlorophenoxy - alkanols of the general formula <FORM:0715856/IV (b)/1> wherein n is 2 or 3 are prepared by reacting an alkali metal phenolate, for example sodium or potassium 2 : 4-dichlorophenolate, with a monohaloaliphatic alcohol, for example ethylene chlorohydrin, 1-bromopropanol-3 or propylene bromohydrin. They may alternatively be produced by reacting 2 : 4-dichlorophenol with ethylene or propylene oxide in the presence of a catalyst for example sodium hydroxide or sulphuric acid. The examples specify the use of 1 - (2 : 4 - dichlorophenoxy) - 2 - ethanol and -propanol in herbicidal compositions.ALSO:A root inhibiting composition comprises a compound of the formula: <FORM:0715856/VI/1> wherein n is 2 or 3, and a finely divided inert solid, an organic solvent, a dispersing agent, or an aqueous emulsion. Solids specified are talc, pyrophyllite, attapulgite clay, gypsum, diatomaceous earth, Fuller's earth and bentonite. Wetting, sticking and emulsifying agents may be added to dust formations which may be employed as such, or as dispersions in water. The active ingredient may be compounded with a dispersing agent, without the inclusion of a finely divided inert solid, and the mixture employed as a spray concentrate. Liquid carriers include aqueous emulsions of petroleum distillates and fatty oils and solvents such as toluene, petroleum oils, acetone, lower aliphatic alcohols, liquid halohydrocarbons and synthetic organic oils. Wetting, dispersing and emulsifying agents specified are: alkali and alkaline earth metal caseinates, blood albumen, alkali metal salts of long chain aliphatic sulphates, partially neutralized sulphuric acid derivatives of petroleum oils and naturally occurring glycerides, sulphonated derivatives of phenols and aromatic acids and their salts, soaps, condensation products of alkylene oxides with phenols and organic acids, alkanolamines, and complex ether-alcohol and esters. The examples specify the use of the alkyl aryl sulphonate "Nacconol," the sodium salt of the sulphonated naphthalene formaldehyde condensate "Daxad" (Registered Trade Mark), the di-butyl-phenyl monoether of polypropylene glycol (containing from 8 to 12 -C3 H60-units), an oleic acid ester of polyethylene glycol, and a modified polyglycol mixed ester petroleum sulphonate.
