Abstract

A fungicidal composition comprises one or more derivatives of a tetrahydropyrimidine having at least nine carbon atoms in the molecule and an inert diluent or carrier, which is not a solvent for the active agent, with or without the further addition of other fungicides and/or insecticides. The compositions may be in the form of (a) dusts especially with ion-exchange colloids such as clays (b) wettable powders (c) clay-mineral oil suspensions (d) emulsions in which a solution of the pyrimidine in a mineral oil or organic solvent is emulsified with an ionic or non-ionic wetting agent e.g. polyethylene glycol alkyl phenols, alkanolamines e.g. di- or tri-ethanolamine, soaps such as sodium stearate and sodium abietate and sodium petroleum sulphonates. A preferred emulsifiable oil contains 4 to 30 per cent tetrahydropyrimidine, 0.5 to 10 per cent emulsifying agent, 0.1 to 1.0 per cent emulsifier improver (e.g. isopropyl alcohol, creosote, methyl ethyl ketone, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether) and balance hydrocarbon oil. The tetrahydropyrimidines may be used in the form of their salts with e.g. benzoic, toluic, acetic, hydrochloric, sulphuric and phosphoric acids. The tetrahydropyrimidines may be prepared according to Specifications 647,432 and 679,637, [both in Group IV (b)]. Many examples of derivatives of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine, 2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrimidine and 3,4,5, 6-tetrahydropyrimidine are given. Preferred fungicides are :-(a) 1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine derivatives containing 10 to 30 carbon atoms in the molecule and having at least six hydrocarbon radicals attached to not less than four nuclear carbon or nitrogen atoms e.g. 2,2-dimethyl-4,4,5,6-tetraethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine; (b) 2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrimidine derivatives containing 9 to 30 carbon atoms and having at least 5 hydrocarbon radicals attached to not less than 3 nuclear carbon atoms e.g. 2,4-dimethyl-2,4,6-triakyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrimidine; and (c) 3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine derivatives containing 9 to 30 carbon atoms and at least 4 hydrocarbon radicals attached to at least 3 nuclear carbon atoms e.g. 2-decyl-4,4,6-trimethyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine.
