715,620. Stands. DESSERTENNE, J. H., and DOMINGUEZ Y SALMERON, G. R. June 11, 1951 [June 9, 1950; March 12, 1951], No. 13845/51. Class 52(3) [Also in Group XV] A portable easel, paint-tube &c. container, and canvas holder comprises a box or container with two parallel flanges extending in the front to back direction, a canvas-carrying mast pivotally secured between the flanges, and three supporting legs one at least of which is pivotally mounted between the flanges or between additional flanges rigid therewith, the mast and legs being adapted to be collapsed against the box. The mast and legs are telescopic. In one construction, Fig. 1, the container 1 has two vertical partitions 5, 6 having at their rear ends flanges 7, 8 between which is pivoted at 10 the stem 9 of the canvas holder. A plate 12 fixed to or adjustable along the stem has two parallel slots 13, 14 with side extensions 15, 16 engaged by studs on a U-shaped member 17 which can be adjusted in height along the plate by means of the stud-and-slot arrangement. Telescoping into the stem 9 is an extension 9a carrying at its upper end another U-shaped member 11, the two members 11, 17 constituting the canvas carrier. Means to adjust the inclination of the stem 9 are provided and, in the'form illustrated, comprise two rods hinged to the lower end of the stem beyond the pivot 10 and having bolts projecting through slots 30 in the partitions 6, 7; wing nuts secure the bolts in the desired position. Two flanges 38 rigid with and preferably integral with the flanges 7, 8 are situated below the container 1 and the front leg 39 is pivoted at 40 between them. The rear legs 41, 42 are pivoted at 46, 47 respectively, Fig. 2, to a plate 43 hinged at 45 to the flanges, and each carries a bolt 48 engaging a slot 49 in the plate 43 for adjusting its angular position. A strut may be provided for the leg 39. All three legs are telescopic in the same manner as the mast 9, 9a, the construction being as follows: the stem 9 is U-shaped and extending across it is a bolt 22, Fig .6, carrying a leaf-spring 23 that is held in position by a split pin 24. The extension 9a slides within the stem 9 beneath the parts 22, 23, 24 and is secured in the desired position by a wing-nut 25 on the bolt 22. Side covers or boxes 2, 3 are hinged to the lateral edges of the container 1 so as to fold over on to the bottom and top respectively of the container and enclose the canvas holder and legs when these have been collapsed on to the container. Rings 53, 54, 55 are provided on both ends of the container for receiving a securing strap or straps or for attaching a canvas-holding bag. By the same means, bags 64, 65, Fig. 9 (not shown), may be secured to the two sides of the closed container. When the device is in use, a strap suspended from one of the rings may carry a weight to increase the stability. In a modified construction, Figs. 11 and 14, the container 70 has an underneath recess 79, to the sides 80, 81 of which the rear legs 71, 72 are pivoted by clamping bolts 82. The front leg 73 is pivoted between flanges 33 which extend through the container and carry the pivot 10 for the canvas-holding mast 110, 84, 86. A strut 91 is provided for the leg 73. The upper end of the part 86 of the mast carries a member 108 with a lining 109 of sponge rubber for engaging one edge of a canvas, and the part 84 adjustably carries a U- shaped member 102 also lined with sponge rubber 107 to engage the other edge of the canvas. The parts 84, 86 are respectively square and channel shaped in section to slide one within the other and are clamped at the desired adjusted length by rotating a screwed spindle 88, Fig. 15, so that a threaded block 89 thereon is moved to pressagainst and clamp the sides of the parts 84, 86 together. A similar arrangement may be employed in the telescopic construction of the legs. The part 84 may be adjusted about its axis relatively to the part 110 and for this purpose an axial pin 111 on the part 110 projects ino the part 84 which has two bolts engaging a circumferential groove in the pin, one of the bolts carrying wing- nuts 118 by which the parts 84, 110 may be secured in adjusted position. To vary the inclination of the mast, a clamping bolt 37, Fig. 11, thereon engages slots 35 in the flanges 33. The top of the container 70 is closed by two plates 75, 76 which are slidable laterally on guideways, formed in the container and constitute oil and water colour palettes respectively. These plates are held in closed position by hinged members 77, 78 which at their rear ends carry flaps 96, 97, Fig. 13 (not shown), to cover the rear part of the container 70 not closed by the plates 75, 76. The members 77, 78 also have attached thereto U-shaped members 98, 99 holding leaf springs or lined with sponge rubber, the arrangement being such that in the closed position, the members 98, 99, are situated in alignment with the member 102 and canvases can be inserted between the members 98, 99, 102 and the member 108. A handle 120 is provided, the securing rings of which in association with rings on the side 121 of the container may be employed for the insertion of holding straps.
