Abstract
715,418. Opening fibrous material. DENOVAN, J. J., and DENOVAN, R. A. June 16, 1952, No. 15147/52. Class 120(1) A machine for opening and separating asbestos fibres from asbestos ore particles comprises a rotor mounted axially in an upright cylindrical casing 1, a plurality of beating devices spaced vertically in the casing and each comprising a pair of annular plates 28 mounted on the rotor, and a series of flybars 29 circumferentially arranged about plates 28 and pivoted thereto at 30, each flybar having a pair of diverging arms and an intermediate curved portion seated between a pair of the plates, the flybars being relatively spaced to permit free swinging movement thereof. Material is fed through openings 5 in the cover 4 of casing 1 and discharged through a tangential outlet 38 opposite a fan 32 at the bottom of the casing. A stationary vertical shaft 17 carries the rotor, which comprises a driving sheave 23, the annular plates 28 and fan blades 37. Each beating device is located in a beating zone 8 lined with an upper internally saw-toothed ring 10 and a lower baffle ring 11 carrying inwardly directed fingers 12 one face of which is grooved at 13. The casing wall includes a pair of doors 40 hinged at 41. The machine may be used on all grades of asbestos particles, including the undersize residues from fibre cleaning screens.
