Abstract
715,321. Teaching music. FIELD, E. E. G. March 2, 1951 [March 4, 1950], No. 5148/51. Class 88 (2). A device for teaching music comprises a slide rule graduated in semi-tones of equal width. The base is marked with the notes of the piano keyboard from F 2 to G' and two slides are marked with the notes of the tonic solfa from f 2 (fah) to s' (soh). Three parallel guides 3, 4, 5 mounted on a board 1 support two slides 9, 10. The top slide 9 shows both major and minor scales and names such as the tonic. The slides can be reversed to show the relative values of the musical intervals and the numbers of sharps and flats in the major keys. The ranges of the bass, alto, tenor and soprano voices are indicated on the board. An additional guide 28 may be provided to enable the notes of chords such as the dominant 7th to be picked out in any scale by means of slides 30, Fig. 5. Different chords may be shown on opposite sides of the same slide.
