Abstract

714,490. Surface hardening. DELAPENA & SON. Ltd. Nov. 26, 1951 [Nov. 30, 1950], No. 29327/50. Class 72 [Also in Group XI] In a method of hardening serrated articles by high frequency electric induction heating and quenching, the induction coil has a core which is disposed normally to the pitch line, or to the tangent to the pitch are should the serrated surface be curved, with one end of the core projecting into a tooth space and being profiled to approximately the same form as the space so that the flux concentration is substantially uniform over the tooth flanks and trough. As shown, a spur gear wheel is hardened by heaters, with cores 11, which are profiled so as to leave a gap of approximately 1 mm. between cores and wheel. Pipes 13 attached to the cores carry quenching liquid, so that the spaces 10a are hardened as the cores move along the serrations. If the tips also of the teeth are to be hardened, the cores are provided with the outline indicated at 18. Splash guards may be fitted to the cores on their edges adjoining the quenching pipes, each in the form of a narrow extension reducing the width of the gap. The tooth gaps may be treated one at a time using a single core. or a group of cores may be used. The cores may be built up from powdered magnetic material or of steel laminae as described in Specification 714.488, [Group XI]:
