714,308. Statistical apparatus. MAUL, M. June. 17,! 1952 [June 27, 1951], No. 15253/52. Class 106 (1) A sorting machine for record cards having printing card-counters associated with the various sorting pockets is characterized in that the printing section of the machine includes, in addition to. the printing card-counter and the pocket indication means, a printing device operatively connected to the column selector means so that, not only the'number of cards in the individual pockets, but also the pocket indication and record column to which the printed number of cards relates, is printed The machine operates on a card as shown in Fig. 1 according to the code shown in Fig. 18. The numeral 5 and those above 4 are represented by one of the values 0-4 and an additional hole having the value 5. This code permits sorting in two runs so that the machine requires only five sorting pockets and a reject pocket. Positioning of the analysing device over the required column is effected by the crank 13, Fig. 2, the number of the column selected being indicated at the window 15. Sorting takes place in two runs in the first cards 0-4 are sorted into the respective pockets while 5 and above are sorted to the reject pocket. Counters are associated with each pocket and indicates the cards counted in a window 12 above each pocket. Adjacent to each, counter is a type wheel for printing the numbers counted The type wheel is shifted when the sortings run is changed so that the counters are set either for numerals 0-4 or 5-9. The column selected is also printed by further type wheels dependent on the column and the deck selected. The unsorted cards are deposited in the magazine 16 and are moved by card knives 17, Fig. 3, between feed rolls 18. The analysing device comprises a set of brushes 19 with six sorting brushes 61 to 66 arranged one behind the other. 'The selector magnets W1 to W5 are connected to the first five brushes analysing positions I to V, Fig. 18, the sixth brush 66 controls the relay 17 for selecting the sorting run. The card deflectors 29 a-e are shown in Fig. 5, the arrangement being such that any given magnet W1-5 when operated through its associated sensing brush by the card, raises its own deflector and those arranged above it. The counters indicate the numbers of cards in the various 'pockets and the counter print the result on a paper web. The counters also print the character or pocket designation, and at each printing the column number on which the brushes are adusted is printed. Printing is effected by pulling a handle 111, Fig. 19, feeding of the paper web is automatically effected atter printing. The knob 112 serves for zeroizing and the knob 113 is a manual paper feed arrangement. The counter mechanism is shown in Fig. 20 and the associated printing mechanism in Fig. 21. The counter is of the ratchet type operated one step each time the electromagnet 2 is energized thus rotating the toothed wheel 117 mounted on the sha't 128. Also mounted on the shaft 128 and secured rigidly to the ratchet wheel 117 is a type wheel 126. The ratchet wheel is rigidly connected to the units wheel 126 and is also connected to a disc 127 which carries a tooth 127a for effecting tens transfer. When the tooth 127a moves from position 9 to 0 it moves the toothed wheel 129 mounted on the shaft 131. The toothed wheel 129 engages the toothed wheel 134 which is connected to the type wheel of the next highest order. A 'locking wheel 132 with ratchet teeth and a ratchet pawl 133 are provided to ensure positive locking of the counter mechanism. In each type wheel 126 a recess 126a is provided in which a spring 136 is located, Fig. 21. When the type wheels are set the spring 136 slides over a groove provided in the shaft 128. When it is required to zeroize the counter mechanism the shaft 128 is rotated once in counterclockwise direction, the springs 136 engage in the groove at various points during the revolution of the shaft 128 and the counter wheels and associated type wheels are zeroized. Fig. 22 shows a plan view of the counter and printing mechanism, the type wheels 137a-e mounted on shaft 128 print the pocket numbers associated with each complete counter of which there are five, the pocket number wheels not being zeroized with the counter type wheels. The column number is printed by the type wheels 141 and 142 these also are not affected by zeroizing. Setting of the type wheels 141 and 142 is effected through two idler gears from the visual column indicator referred to above. Printing is effected by the printing hammer 143 which is rocked against the type wheels pressing the paper and ribbon against the latter. While the hammer is moving upward the paper feed roller 144 is rocked downward and the paper is drawn through feed roller 144 from the supply roll 146. Specifications 300,909, [Class 106 (i)], and 593,506 are referred to.
