Abstract

Classes 144(1) and 144(2) [Also in Group XXXII] To increase its resilience, a pneumatic or liquid filled tyre has a fluid flow connection 11 with an elastic-walled expansible chamber 1 held between two plates 3, 4 which have complementary convex and concave surfaces respectively and are spring urged towards each other to resist expansion of the chamber 1, the peripheral edges of the chamber 1 extending beyond the compression area of the plates 3, 4 to avoid wrinkling of the chamber wall. As shown plates 3 and 4, with the chamber 1 therebetween are bolted to a wheel disc and covered by a plate 7. Spring-loading of the plate 4 may be effected by laminated leaf springs 5 or by coil springs, and the plates 3, 4 may be dished, as shown, or annular, with an annular chamber 1 therebetween. A valve which allows free flow of fluid to the chamber 1 from the tyre but restricts the return flow may be inserted in the connection 11. In a liquid filled tyre, flexiblewalled enclosed air chambers may be provided in the tyre to supplement the action of chamber 1 and to lighten the tyre.
