Abstract
713,930. Centrifugal separators. HEINRICH, O. X. Oct. 14, 1952 [Oct. 16, 1951], No. 25700/52. Class 23 A centrifugal separator, for removing particles from gas, comprising a tube 25, whirl producing means 26 at the inlet end of the tube, and a core member 33, has the dimensions of the tube and core so chosen that with a gas velocity of 1500 cm/sec. the Reynold's Number (based on the kinematic viscosity of the gas alone), is less than 10,000 so that the flow in the separator is predominantly laminar. The invention ensures that particles below 10 microns diameter are removed from the gas. As shown the cells 12 of a multi-cell separator having inlet and outlet ducts 15, 16 are separators according to the invention. The whirl producing means are blades arranged to form tangential inlets to the cells, and the cores are plates arranged to form a cross. The cores penetrate into cleaned gas outlet tubes 28 which have divergent ends fitted with straightening blades 35. Dust discharges from the cells through slots 30 to a dust collecting chamber 20 having a screw conveyer 21 for removal of dust. Pipes 23, 27<SP>1</SP> permit the recirculation of 10-15 per cent. of the main gas flow from the chamber 20 to the inlets of the cells. Dust in the recirculated gas may be used to increase the actual viscosity of the gas and dust to ensure the flow is laminar. In a modification, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the inlets of the cells are axial and the tubes are provided with slots in the vicinity of the inlet so that gas is drawn from the dust collecting chamber into the cells without external fittings.
