Abstract

713,401. Photo-electric control systems. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd. Oct. 3, 1952 [Oct. 16, 1951], No. 24875/52. Class 40 (3). [Also in Groups XXIII and XXXV] Local sagging of a moving horizontal ribbon of glass 3, Fig. 1, due to wear of the lower tools 2 in an apparatus for simultaneously grinding or polishing both faces of the glass is prevented by using the deviation of the glass to control the illumination of photo-electric cells to initiate resetting of the tools. A sensing head 7 rigidly connected to a pivot pin 8, Fig. 4, is swung about the axis of the pin into contact with the lower face of the glass as each tool 2 passes it, by means of a spring-loaded lever 20 which is oscillated intermittently and in timed relationship with the movement of the tools by a cam 22. The lever is coupled to an arm 15 fixedly mounted on the pin 8 by a spring 19, a pivoted support 17 and an adjusting screw 16. When sagging occurs, the movement of the head 7 is arrested before the full travel normally produced by the cam 22 has been completed and the lever 20 moves relatively to the support 17 against the resistance of the spring 19 to permit the light from a collimator 30 to pass through a slot in a mask 34. The light is directed to one of six stationary photo-electric cells 40 according to which tool is adjacent the sensing head by a totally reflecting prism 36 rotating in step with the tools. The signal thus produced is amplified to operate a time switch 43, Fig. 6, which closes a circuit through slip rings 51 to an electromagnet 50, Fig. 3, on the appropriate tool head for a predetermined time. A spring-loaded pawl 47 mounted on a lever 46 which is continuously oscillated by a stationary eccentric 53 as it rotates with the tool head is displaced by the magnet into engagement with a ratchet wheel 45 on a nut 4 to rotate the latter and lift the tool. A fixed screen 35, Fig. 4, prevents passage of light to the prism as the lever 20 returns to inoperative position at the end of a sensing operation. The tool adjustment may be pneumatic or hydraulic and the sensing may be continuous instead of intermittent.
